American tourists are pouring into Britain on an historic spending spree as a result of the pound’s slump since June last year. The dollar was trading at $1.29 to the pound on Friday. The figures suggest some tourist related businesses outside London are also benefiting. The US currency has reached historic highs against sterling, making it far cheaper for Americans to stay in the UK, eat in expensive restaurants and buy luxury goods. The drop has been a boon for US tourists and a painful reminder of the effects of the vote for Britons holidaying abroad this summer. The US has surged up Global Blue’s league table of non-EU visitors, with Americans second only to the Chinese in June. The pound reached a low of $1.21 in January – the lowest since 1985. That represents an 18 per cent discount on any product bought here compared with June last year, before the decision to leave the EU was cast, and a 29 per cent saving on three years ago. The number of American tourists also rose in the first quarter of the year, but by 16 per cent, indicating each visitor is on average spending more than they did last year. But currency analysts suggest sterling could show further weakness later this year when Brexit talks begin in earnest once again. Spending by Americans rose 70 per cent in the first half of this year against the same period in 2016. The boom is providing a silver lining for companies that benefit from higher tourist spending, even as other parts of the economy are struggling with high import costs. Spending outside the capital was up 56 per cent.

Ryan Moore has earmarked a tough day of riding at Royal Ascot on Thursday as the likes of Chantilly and Port Fairy look to come good. I was very impressed and, while you have to respect a fair few of these, I like to think I am on the best horse going into the race. I ride Chantilly. He bumped into a very smart horse in the shape of King’s Gambit in the London Gold Cup last time, and the fourth Persica, who also goes in here, came out and won well at Epsom, so I think a 2lb rise is fair enough. As with the Queen’s Vase on Wednesday, we run four in here and they all have their chance at the weights. We were obviously disappointed when he was beaten by Cowardofthecounty first time up but, dropped down to 5f last time, he showed us what we were expecting on his debut as he made all to beat the subsequent Marble Hill winner Arizona Blaze pretty easily. He will also be onboard Whistlejacket for the first race of the day, which he believes he is on the ‘best horse’ in the race and has talked him up as a ‘very exciting prospect’. This will be the quickest ground he has encountered, but he should go well if he handles it. It’s a very open race, though. He will clearly need to step up on his third at Naas last time, but I do think he is probably better than his mark of 90. He has to go and show it in the deepest race he has been in, but hopefully the Kingman colt can give a good account of himself in a first-time visor. They both have a bit to find here, though. This is a very competitive and deep handicap. That Newbury form could be key, as the runner-up Poniros is also in here. The step down in trip should be okay, as he had fair form over a mile earlier in the season. King’s Gambit well be the one to beat in here, as he was so impressive at Newbury, but the ratings tell you this is pretty open. Rubies Are Red’s sights are lowered after taking in the Oaks after a promising run from off the pace at Lingfield, while Port Fairy comes here a fresher horse after a good second at Chester and she is tried in a first-time visor. I haven’t ridden him before but he certainly comes in here in good form, following up his Chester win with a close third at Newmarket last time. Obvious, I know, but his 2022 form sets him apart from these and hopefully he is ready to return to his Group 1-winning best after winning his warm-up races, from stablemate Queenstown, at Navan and Leopardstown. The first thing to say is that you can make a case for several of these, but the second is that my horse is still the one to beat. He is going the right way and it is just a matter of whether the handicapper has him now. Winner of this race in 2022, when he won four Group 1s on the spin, we are very happy with him coming into this. My horse Portland is up there on the figures and he showed a good attitude to win for me over 1m4f at Leopardstown recently. I ride the latter, so hopefully I am on the right one, but they both need to improve, as I have said. There is very little between our fillies in here; indeed they are rated the same on a mark of 97 and we are happy with both of them.

LONDON, Sept 27 (Reuters) – E-commerce giant Shopify is investing in wholesale platform Faire, the companies said on Wednesday, in a global deal that would see the start-up adopt Shopify technology for its clients. The company last year invested in U.S. Faire, founded in 2017 and valued at $12.59 billion, would become the recommended wholesale marketplace for Shopify merchants. For Shopify, which sells tools to create and manage online store-fronts, this is the latest in a series of deals. Faire CEO Max Rhodes said. Shopify’s director of product Aneeqa Khan said the partnership would make it easy for Shopify merchants to find wholesale buyers, and enable retailers (click home page) to source from Faire’s network of brands. The companies declined to disclose the value of the deal or how big a stake Shopify was taking. Small retailers, too, are trying to stand out amid intense competition on the high street and online. Klaviyo, which made its debut on the New York Stock Exchange last week, and it also has a partnership with Dutch payments firm Adyen. Faire said the most popular search filter on its platform is “Not on Amazon”, as retailers look to source less widely available products. Faire, which focuses on independent businesses, says brands that previously only sold directly to consumers are switching to a wholesale model as they seek to curb their running costs.
