A rare 19th century gold seal that belonged to explorer John Oxley has been stolen from an exhibit in Sydney’s west. The historian told AAP that staff and volunteers were very distressed by the disappearance of the seal. He is described as having a dark complexion, about 175cm tall and of medium build and was wearing a black beanie, a dark top with a white stripe and carrying a small black backpack. Rebecca Pinchin, Collection Manager for the National Trust in NSW, said the seal is irreplaceable. The fob seal was taken from its exhibition case at Old Government House in Parramatta on Thursday. Ms Pinchin said it was used by Oxley to “impress and seal correspondence”. NSW Police said the theft occurred between 2.30pm and 2.45pm on Thursday and issued a description of a man who may know more about the incident. The seal was on loan to the National Trust and belonged to Oxley, who was the Surveyor-General of NSW from 1812. The seal bears his family crest and is engraved with the motto “Patientia et Fortitudine” or “Patience and Strength”. The seal is made of engraved rock crystal and mounted in an 18-carat gold converted fob-watch, and is about the size of a large ring.

ZURICH, Nov 8 (Reuters) – Cartier jewelry owner Richemont reported a dip in quarterly sales on Friday, as the luxury goods group largely offset tougher conditions in China with growth elsewhere. Chairman Johann Rupert said Richemont had shown “sustained resilience in a world where uncertainty has become the norm,” noting that its jewelry business continued to do well. Like other luxury companies, Richemont has been battling weaker demand in China caused by the economic slowdown in the world’s second biggest economy. Bernstein analyst Luca Solca, although watches performed much worse than expected. Its luxury rivals have reported mixed fortunes, with LVMH missing third quarter sales forecasts, saying consumer confidence in China had fallen to pandemic-era lows. Rupert said in a statement, adding Richemont would continue to invest in production and marketing. Big sales increases in the Americas, Japan and the Middle East helped offset an 18% drop in the Asia Pacific region in the three months to the end of September. Analysts have been cutting forecasts for the luxury goods sector over the past few months to adjust for the slump in China, with HSBC last week lowering its estimate for Richemont´s organic sales growth next year to 0.3% from 2.9% previously. The owner of Swiss watchmakers including IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Piaget said sales fell by 1% at constant exchange rates to 4.81 billion euros ($5.19 billion), slightly above analyst consensus forecasts of 4.78 billion euros cited by HSBC. Richemont, which makes necklaces, earrings and bracelets under the Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Buccellati brands, on Friday reported sales increasing by 4% at its jewelry business, while watches clocked a 19% downturn.
