Treasures from the world’s most valuable shipwreck are being displayed in New York 400 years after they sunk to the bottom of the sea off Florida’s coast. Finally, in July 1985, the main treasure pile was discovered in the ship’s main hull. The Nuestra Señora de Atocha and all its New World treasures, owned by Spain’s King Philip IV, left Havana in early September 1622, carrying 265 people as well as 40 tons of silver, gold and assorted riches taken from Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Venezuela. But the Spanish galleon and its sister ship Santa Margarita sunk to the bottom of the ocean after a hurricane struck just days after the doomed voyage began, killing hundreds, including wealthy colonizers who brought their personal jewels. The anticipated Winter Show in New York City this year offers a rare look into three historical items recovered from the the Nuestra Señora de Atocha shipwreck, including an emerald crucifix, a royal orb and a gold-and-emerald ring. Spanish salvagers searched for the sunken treasure for six decades with no luck. The cargo of gold, silver, copper, tobacco, and gem was so vast that it had taken two months to transport it onto the Nuestra Señora de Atocha. The treasures, many taken from Colombia’s Muzo mine and worth an estimated $1.1billion today, sunk on the ocean floor from the Marquesas Keys to the Dry Tortugas, between 30 and 70 miles west of Key West. It wasn’t until 1969, when former chicken farmer Mel Fisher began a relentless search of the area that the valuables started emerging from the bottom of the sea.

The loot included 70 pounds of Colombian emeralds, 180,000 silver coins, 24 tons of Bolivian silver, 125 gold bars and a collection of Venezuelan pearls (www.backtoglamour.com/blog/2024/09/14/discover-what-alkali-metals-is/). The spectacular jewels now survive as Muzo’s The Private Collection – the largest, privately owned collection of coveted objects from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha. It’s not clear how much the items sold for then, but an emerald ring from the sunken treasure sold in 2022 for over $1million – even though it was originally valued at about $60,000. Thousands of mysterious gems remained at the bottom of the ocean, and others gems were later made into jewelry in the style of a 17th century Spanish court. The Royal Orb, meanwhile, was handcrafted by goldsmiths, likely of Colombian origin, and showcases 37 Muzo emeralds intricately set into 22K yellow gold. It is set in a high karat gold, designated for 17th century royalty. We want people to understand the legacy of the mine and the stories behind it,’ said Gabbi Harvey, head of business development at Muzo Emerald Colombia. The numerous pear shape emeralds are cut in the same fashion as emeralds on Spanish crosses and brooches worn by royal circles in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, three spectacular jewelry items were recovered from the ship’s haul in near perfect condition – The Atocha Cross, The Royal Orb and The Atocha Ring. It features nine vividly green emerald cabochons set into a rich, 22K yellow gold cross pattern. The mine’s being around for so long and we want to leave the environment as we found it. The wreck’s most valuable item, the ornate Atocha cross, is the most prized of all artifacts from the shipwreck. Considered wonders of the New World, Muzo emeralds are prized as one of four mythical gemstones – along with the rubies of Mogok, the sapphires of Kashmir and the diamonds of Golconda. The Atocha Ring, on its part, features a brilliant green emerald from Colombia’s Muzo mine, weighing approximately 2.5 carats. The spectacular jewels now survive as Muzo’s The Private Collection – the largest, privately owned collection of coveted objects from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha.
