LONDON, Oct 8 (Reuters) – Gold and coffee helped to deliver trend-following hedge funds a positive result in September, a Societe Generale note showed on Tuesday, thanks to record commodities prices, rising equities and falling interest rates. Robusta coffee futures also reached record highs last month. Gold has surged almost 30% this year to a record high on Sept. The bank research did not show which pairs were on the other side of the currency crosses, nor what kind of way the commodities trades were structured. 26. The precious metal has been one of the best performing financial assets in 2024 for these kinds of hedge funds which use price and trading volumes data to find and trade market trends, said the SocGen note seen by Reuters. A long position is essentially a bet that an asset will rise in value. Over half of the trend funds posted a positive return for the month, the bank research showed. Sterling, though it proved a positive position in September was still a losing position for trend funds in the year so far. The mean return for the group of 96 funds tracked by Societe Generale’s prime brokerage trading desk returned roughly 0.7% for September, with the highest return coming in at a positive 7.41% and the lowest at a negative 15.77% said the note. New notable positions that trend followers entered towards the end of September included long positions in Hong Kong’s Hang Seng stock index, sugar, silver, lean hogs, German and Spanish stock indices the Canadian, Australian and New Zealand dollar, said the bank. Other losing positions for the year-to-date included the Mexican peso, silver and natural gas, it said. RIO DE JANEIRO, June 30 (Reuters) – Brazilian state-controlled oil company PetrĂ³leo Brasileiro SA said on Friday it would review fuel prices more frequently as it seeks to regain market share it lost by keeping wholesale prices to retailers above global benchmarks. That committee includes the company’s chief executive, Pedro Parente, as well as Monteiro and Jorge Celestino, the company’s head of refining and natural gas. Since 2016, the state oil company has set fuel prices at least once a month, which is not often enough to keep up with international oil price changes and volatility in Brazil’s exchange rate, the company said in a press statement on Friday. Chief Financial Officer Ivan Monteiro said at a press conference on Friday. From July 3, the Petrobras sales and marketing division will adjust diesel and gasoline prices a maximum of 7 percent from a reference point set by an executive committee. Petrobras continues to dominate fuel production and retail sales in Brazil, but its higher wholesale prices have led to a sharp rise in imports of gasoline and diesel as competitors seek to undercut Petrobras at the pump. In exceptional circumstances, it could approve a price change larger than seven percent. Petrobras has been caught flat-footed by more nimble competitors that have been able to import gasoline and diesel they can sell more cheaply to gas station networks in the country. After years of subsidizing local consumption by keeping fuel prices low despite high international fuel costs, Petrobras kept prices fairly steady to make a profit after oil prices plunged in 2014. But that led the company to lose market share, so last October it introduced a policy of following international markets more closely. The reference price will include the cost of imports, taxes and margins.

A man extradited from NSW after a woman’s body was found inside a box on the balcony of a Brisbane apartment will face court after being charged with murder. Assistance has been sought from Interpol to obtain a DNA profile from Ms Yan’s family. Queensland Police have confirmed Ms Yan’s mother has identified jewellery found with the body, which was wrapped in a sheet inside the sealed box at the unit in Hamilton. Ms Yan was reported missing on April 12 and the body was found on Monday. Zhao was arrested on the same day at his Sydney home.
