Plans to make detainees wear GPS tracking ankle bracelets after they were released into the community following the High Court ruling has hit a snag. The agency is also struggling to get hold of enough monitors. A Border Force spokeswoman said State and Territory authorities had agreed to provide ankle bracelets to support the immediate response. The High Court ruled on November 8 it was unlawful to indefinitely detain someone leading to the release of 116 people – with murderers and rapists among the group. A lock of Napoleon Bonaparte’s hair and other ‘priceless’ artefacts linked to the French emperor have been stolen from a museum in Australia. The museum said the collection was put together by descendants of Englishman Alexander Balcombe, who met Napoleon when he was exiled on the tiny South Atlantic island of St Helena from 1815 until the emperor’s death six years later. The thieves removed outside blinds and entered through a bathroom of the historic Briars Park homestead in Mount Martha on Thursday night. Ten items were stolen from the collection, including locks of Napoleon’s hair and a silver inkwell set with three gold Napoleon coins which were allegedly in his pocket when he died. The burglars then ‘jemmied open cabinets’ and rare stole artefacts linked to the military leader including a glass frame containing Napoleon’s hair, a ring and a snuff box. A statement by the police said: ‘The offender(s) have jemmied open cabinets inside and stolen numerous priceless antiques. We’re quite distraught,’ York said.
