(AP) – The son of a Kentucky dentist has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of a woman whose body was found in the dentist’s home over a year ago. He said they were delayed by long-standing backlogs in evidence processing at the Kentucky State Police forensic lab. Prosecutors said in court this week that the dentist orchestrated the cleanup of bloody clothing, WLEX-TV reported. Brent Turner, the state prosecutor handling the case, said investigators “had to move heaven and earth” to get forensics results from the crime scene. Both father and son are charged with seven counts of evidence tampering at the crime scene. A third man, Josh Mullins, was also charged with evidence tampering. The body of 38-year-old Amber Spradlin was found in the home of Floyd County dentist Dr. Michael McKinney in June 2023 after she had spent a night out with friends. Spradlin had been stabbed 11 times, news outlets reported. McKinney’s son, Michael “MK” McKinney III, 24, was arrested at a restaurant this week in eastern Kentucky and charged with murder, court records show. Bail for the son was set at $5 million; the dentist´s bond was set at $250,000. An attorney for Michael McKinney III did not respond Friday morning to an email message seeking comment. The McKinneys and Mullins pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday. According to the indictment, that included removal or destruction of the younger McKinney´s clothes, a security camera, a computer hard drive and a knife handle.

WASHINGTON, May 23 (Reuters) – Norfolk Southern agreed to pay a $15 million civil penalty and $57.1 million in past government cleanup costs on Thursday, as well as millions in future costs to resolve a U.S. The U.S. Justice Department and EPA sued Norfolk Southern in March 2023 to ensure the railroad paid full cost of cleanup and any long-term effects of the derailment. The safety improvements include installing additional devices to detect overheated wheel bearings early enough to prevent derailments like the East Palestine incident. Last month, Norfolk Southern agreed to pay $600 million to settle a class action lawsuit over the derailment. Under a proposed consent decree estimated to be worth more than $310 million, the railroad also agreed to significant safety improvements and training, which includes installing additional safety equipment after the derailment of the train that caught fire and released over a million gallons of hazardous materials and pollutants. The settlement covers personal injury claims from residents and businesses in the city and impacted surrounding communities. The settlement will pay for treatment for individual medical needs stemming from the disaster, the Environmental Protection Agency said.
